Super Storm, like the Kuwait images, owes a debt to the paintings by Heade. But here the storm is approaching as a singular force of destruction rather than an oddly tranquil wave of darkness. Tornados are only one of the systems that may be affected by global warming. This triple tornado touched down near Hill City, Kansas on June 9, 2005, as part of a wave of unusually strong storms

Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904) moved quite often during his painting career. He was basically known for his expressive coastal scenes around Boston. He played light against dark with stormy skies and pelting rain. |
